Children's Dentistry

Why a Dental Therapist?

Why would you bring your child to a Dental Therapist instead of a Dentist?  Dental Therapists have training in early childhood development and vast experience with kids.  They learn very quickly how best to manage nervous patients, how to explain procedures in easy to understand language and how to make dental visits fun.  Because the range of treatment they provide is all relatively basic (no root canals, crowns, bridges, dentures, implants. etc.) they are "experts" in a small field.

Some background Information on Dental Therapists:

Dental Therapists (also known as Oral Health Therapists) have been working in Dentistry in Australia since the 1960's, although as a relatively small group of professionals they are still often confused with Dental Hygienists, Dental Technicians, Dental Assistants etc.  For many years Therapists worked only in the public system.

Their roles have evolved over time and now Therapists are able to work in the private and public sectors in general practice and in most states orthodontic practices.  Therapists provide basic dental care for childrent up to 18 years of age.  As this age group usually only have routine treatment needs you will usually find that a Dental Therapist can take care of all your child's dental needs.  Examples of treatment a Dental Therapist can provide are check-ups, cleaning, x-rays, fillings, extractions, sealants, dietary and brushing advice.

Naomi graduated with a Diploma of Applied Science (Dental Therapy) in 1993.  She spent 9 years working for the School Dental Service in regional Victoria and then while taking a break to start her family completed a course in Orthodontics for Oral Health Therapists at the University of Melbourne.

She commenced work in the private sector in 2005 and worked in Warragul in general practice and Melbourne in an orthodontic practice until early last year when she and her family realized their dream of moving to the beautiful Tweed Coast and enjoying the beach and the sunshine.

As a Dental Therapist Naomi can provide dental examination, cleaning and scaling, as well as most preventive and restorative treatments including fillings, sealants and extractions for children up to 18 years of age.  She will refer you to one of our dentists if your child has more complex treatment needs.

With over 12 years experience working solely with children, Naomi firmly believes that early patient education combined with positive dental experiences can set children up to have healthy teeth for life.
